SOFTWARE COMPANY LICENSES UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN TECHNOLOGY
Software Developed at UM Health System Provides Clinical Reminders to Doctors and Patients
Ann Arbor, Michigan – Healthcare IT startup Cielo MedSolutions LLC today announced the signing of a strategically important technology transfer license with the University of Michigan. Cielo has acquired the exclusive commercialization rights to the ClinfoTrackerTM software developed at the University of Michigan Health System (UMHS). Over the past several years under grant funding from the National Institutes of Health, UMHS has developed this web-based software to provide primary care physicians with clinical prompts and reminders.
"We developed ClinfoTracker with the goal of giving primary care practices a software-based preventive and chronic disease quality improvement tool that easily integrates into a busy practice," noted Donald E. Nease, Jr., M.D., a UM associate professor of family medicine and a leader of the team that designed the original software. "We're very pleased to be working with the Cielo MedSolutions team to commercialize our software. Now more primary care practices and the broader healthcare market can benefit from our work."
Cielo MedSolutions chose the UMHS's ClinfoTracker software because of its proven effectiveness in clinical settings. "This tech transfer arrangement with the University of Michigan gives us a great acceleration effect in the market," commented David J. Morin, Cielo's President and CEO. "What we love about what they've done at Michigan is that they've crafted software that does a nice job of following the workflow of primary care clinicians and their staff. Too much of the commercial software out there is written for hospitals and really doesn't help the front-line internists, family physicians and pediatricians who see patients day in and day out. And, we really liked the fact that ClinfoTracker isn't just an academic exercise. The software's been in use for some time now with over a dozen medical clinics in the field. It's been shown to produce measurably improved clinical outcomes in chronic disease management." The ClinfoTracker software will be commercialized under the brand name Cielo ClinicTM.
